The Danish discount supermarket chain offers its own Scotch in the form of the Old House brand.
Braunstein is owned by the brothers Claus and Michael Braunstein. Their brewery, located at the Port of Køge, Denmark, produces a range of modern, craft beers including special seasonal ‘Saison’ brews. Braunstein’s single malts are now well known and popular among Danish whisky enthusiasts.
The brewery/distillery also offers visitors a whisky library and whisky embassy where they can purchase bottles. Braunstein’s independently bottled ‘Embassy Collection’ of cask strength single malts was created for this part of the business, and releases have included a 1973 36-year-old Bunnahabhain, 1973 36-year-old Dailuaine and a 1976 34-year-old Dufftown.
The brothers first toyed with the idea of making and bottling their own whiskies around 1998 during one of several pleasurable fishing trips to Scotland. In 2005 they acquired a harbour-side site and brewing equipment to establish Braunstein in Køge.
By 2007 they had added their distilling apparatus and began to produce their own spirit, and the following year were also bottling their own single cask, cask strength malts for the ‘Embassy Collection’.
