Costco sells whisky under its private label, Kirkland Signature, which was introduced in 1992. The name comes from the then location of its headquarters in Kirkland, Washington.
The company sells a range of single malt Scotch whiskies from various regions, including 12-, 16-, 20- and 25-year-old expressions, as well as some blended Scotch whisky. The widest range of Kirkland Signature Scotch whisky is available in Costco’s home market of the US.
Costco’s origins starts with two separate companies: Price Club, started in San Diego by Sol and Robert Price in 1976, and Costco, started in Seattle by James Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman in 1983.
In 1993, Costco and Price Club merged to create PriceCostCo with a combined 206 locations. The combined company was run by executives from both firms until 1994, when the Prices left to open a retail warehouse club in Central and South America.
In 1997, the company rebranded as Costco Wholesale Corporation and all Price Club stores were rebranded.
As of 2017, Costco has 727 warehouses worldwide across 10 countries.
