Strathearn
Innovative distillery in Perthshire.
A rich, spicy but sweet Speyside malt whisky, Scallywag is a blend of malts distilled at Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes distilleries, amongst others.
Matured in 40% first-fill ex-Sherry butts and 60% ex-Bourbon casks, the whisky has a richly spiced flavour with notes of vanilla, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, nutmeg and cinnamon.
As with the rest of the Remarkable Regional Malts range, it’s non-chill-filtered and bottled at 46% abv.
Scallywag was launched in 2013, its name inspired by a lineage of Douglas Laing family Fox Terriers. The dog that adorns the packaging is Binks, the Laing family’s pup who was missing a tooth on the right hand side.
Scallywag was the first whisky to join Big Peat in Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts series, which had launched in 2009.
The 46% abv edition was shortly followed by a cask strength expression in 2015, bottled at 53.6% abv, and a second in 2016. Only 1,000 cases of each bottling were made available globally.
Scallywag has also appeared with age statements, as a Christmas Red-Nosed Reindeer Edition, and a 2009 vintage released in 2018 to mark World Chocolate Day.
