Shetland Distillery Company Profile

Shetland Distillery Company operates the most northerly distillery in the UK, and the only legal distillery in Shetland. It is 50/50 owned by Debbie and Frank Strang, owners of the Saxa Vord holiday resort in Unst, and The Malt Whisky Company based in Portknockie.

Shetland Distillery Company History

The Shetland Distillery Company was founded in 2013 by two couples with a dream to open the UK’s most northerly distillery on the island of Unst in the Shetlands.

Debbie and Frank Strang, owners of Saxa Vord holiday resort on the island, partnered with Stuart and Wilma Nickerson, owners of independent bottler The Malt Whisky Company, to build Saxa Vord distillery in Haroldswick on the north of the island. In doing so, Saxa Vord became the first – and only – licensed distillery in Shetland.

The distillery’s first release was Shetland Reel Gin, a small batch run of just 500 bottles released in 2014.

Since then Shetland Distillery Company has bottled a second gin and two whiskies – a single cask single malt bottled in Shetland, and a blended malt also bottled in Unst and reduced to strength using local water.
