Blended Scotch whisky Chivas Regal has launched Chivas Extra 13 American Rye, a 13-year-old Australia-exclusive expression finished in ex-rye whiskey casks.
A permanent addition to the brand’s core range in Australia, the whisky is said to have been aged for ‘each year Scotch was not legally available in the US during Prohibition’.
Sandy Hyslop, director of blending at Chivas Brothers, said: [Chivas and America’s] relationship survived the 13 years of Prohibition, which we’ve marked in the age statement of this truly special Chivas Extra expression.
‘The selective cask finish adds an American accent to the Chivas house style — this is one I’m sure will be appreciated by today’s whisky connoisseurs.’
Said to contain notes of ‘citrus orange, creamy milk chocolate and a dusting of cinnamon’ on the palate, the whisky is bottled at 40% abv.
Available from August, Chivas Extra 13 is priced at AUS$80 per 70cl bottle.
The whisky’s label and outer packaging incorporates a ‘bold new design’ by American street artist Greg Gossel, using a graffiti-inspired style to reference ‘iconic [images of] Americana and Chivas’ rich heritage’.
The brand’s Extra range is a series of blended whiskies finished in ‘carefully selected’ casks: Chivas Regal Extra, its flagship expression available worldwide, is a no-age-statement blend matured in ex-oloroso Sherry casks.
