Allied Distillers Profile

In 1987 Allied Lyons PLC purchased the UK operation of Canadian distiller Hiram Walker & Sons. To help integrate the company with the existing distilling and blending operations of the group a new company, Allied Distillers Ltd., was formed.

Allied Distillers History

Allied Lyons was formed in 1978 through the merger of Allied Breweries and catering group J. Lyons & Co, though its name was bestowed some three years later.

In 1987 Allied Lyons purchased the UK operations of Canadian distiller Hiram Walker & Sons and kept an option on the balance of the business.

To control this larger spirits operation – the purchase included licences to the distilleries of Ardbeg, Balblair, Glenmacadam, Miltonduff-Glenlivet, Pulteney and Glenburgie-Glenlivet along with the brands of George Ballantine & Son Ltd. – a subsidiary company, Allied Distillers Ltd. was formed.
